Summary

  • Allow an optional caller-provided apiKey when creating an API key. It must be a UUID v4 with the RFC 4122 variant.
  • Return 409 Conflict if the key name or value already exists. Invalid key values return 400 Bad Request.
  • Add optional apiKeyType: ingestor gets ingest access to all datasets; query gets the reader privilege on all datasets.
  • Preserve the existing flow: when apiKeyType is omitted, callers assign roles; when apiKey is omitted, the server generates and returns a key.

This PR does not add an endpoint to change an existing key’s value or type.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • API keys can now be created with caller-provided values.
    • Added typed API keys for ingest-only or query-only access, with permissions applied automatically.
    • Existing role-based API key creation remains supported when no type is selected.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Added validation for API key format, unsupported fields, conflicting roles, and duplicate values.
    • Improved HTTP responses: validation failures return 400, while duplicate names or values return 409.

Walkthrough

API-key creation accepts optional caller-provided values and ingestor or query types. The handler validates key values, rejects duplicate tenant keys, and assigns roles based on the request. Reserved global roles map to ingest or reader permissions.

Changes

Typed API-Key Creation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request contract and validation
src/apikeys.rs
The request accepts optional API-key values and types, rejects unknown fields, and requires caller-provided values to use the specified UUID v4 format. New errors distinguish duplicate values and invalid type/role combinations.
Reserved role permissions
src/rbac/mod.rs
The reserved ingestor role maps to unrestricted ingest permission. The reserved querier role maps to reader privilege across all streams.
Creation handler
src/handlers/http/apikeys.rs
Typed requests receive the corresponding reserved role and cannot include explicit roles. Untyped requests validate and preserve requested roles. The handler uses a validated supplied key or generates one, and rejects duplicate values within the tenant.

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: nikhilsinhaparseable

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5c71f

The new query-type API key can read internal streams, which the existing reader permission does not allow. Fix this before merging by granting the reader privilege without a wildcard resource. Caller-provided keys with an invalid UUID variant are also accepted, which is a smaller validation gap.

Explanation

The pull request description clearly states the main API-key changes, validation rules, conflict behavior, and preserved behavior. It does not include the template's Description heading, issue reference, rationale, or testing, comments, and documentation checklist, but these omissions do not make the description incomplete enough to block review.

A rabbit checks each key with care,
A UUID hops through the air.
Ingest and query take their roles,
While RBAC guards the access goals.
The burrow rests; the keys are fair.

local Users scan and UPDATE_LOCK alone. Use the shared datastore’s conditional
update or uniqueness transaction, return DuplicateApiKey when it detects an
existing key, and ensure synchronization cannot insert a duplicate key through a

- Line 56: Update the UUID validation condition in the caller-provided key
handling to also require the RFC 4122 variant via uuid.get_variant(), while
retaining the existing length and version-4 checks. Reject UUIDs whose variant
is not RFC 4122 before accepting the key.

Review comments at @src/rbac/mod.rs:
- Line 412: Update the query role permission in the RBAC definition to use the
global reader path by setting its resource to None instead of
ParseableResourceType::Stream("*".to_string()). Preserve the existing permission
while ensuring internal streams remain unauthorized.
